If you’re reading this, it means Book Week is fast approaching! Every year since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia has brought children and books together for one wonderful week, where teachers and librarians emphasise the importance of reading for kids. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book characters and share their stories and recommendations with other kids — each year, it’s hoped that more children will be inspired and excited to read books at home!

Need some inspiration for your child’s next Book Week? We’ve got loads of ideas that are guaranteed to get your son excited about the occasion. Here are some of our top Book Week costume ideas for boys.
It wouldn’t be Book Week without a few Harry Potter characters running around! Your child can be the infamous Harry Potter in our Child Wizard Costume Set — complete with a hat, a cape, a wand and Harry’s signature round glasses, it’ll be hard to miss your little wizard in the crowd. Alternatively, your boy can join the Death Eaters as a dark wizard working for Lord Voldemort in our Child Wizard Black Hooded Cape.
The Hundred and One Dalmatians was a book before it was a Disney movie. In the book, two dalmatians named Pongo and Missis go on an adventure to save their kidnapped puppies from a fur farm run by Cruella de Vil, a woman obsessed with wearing animal furs. We’ve got plenty of dalmatian costumes available so your boy can dress as Pongo, one of the heroes of the story!
Roald Dahl wrote some of the world’s beloved children’s books including Matilda, BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Gremlins, James and the Giant Peach, and many more. One of our favourites is Fantastic Mr Fox which follows Mr Fox as he outwits his farmer neighbours and steals food from right under their noses. Wearing a dapper suit and carrying a cane, Mr Fox always looks suave while committing theft!
Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a story that follows young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of an eccentric chocolatier named Willy Wonka. Dressed in bright colours and carrying a cane, Willy Wonka is one of the Book Week characters for boys that’s hard to miss!
Oliver Twist was published as a serial from 1837 to 1839 and was written by Charles Dickens. It follows the story of an orphan named Oliver Twist who is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker — after he escapes, he meets a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by an elderly criminal named Fagin. It’s a grim tale but it’s an absolute classic, and no doubt the kids will watch the film at school someday!
Where’s Wally is one of the easiest Book Week ideas for boys! Just throw on a red and white striped shirt with a matching beanie and everyone will know who your boy is. Alternatively, go all out with one of our Child Where’s Wally Costumes complete with trousers and a pair of glasses.
