Since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across the country. Schools and public libraries spend one wonderful week celebrating books as well as our talented Australian children’s authors and illustrators, and teachers get creative with displays, activities, competitions and stories relating to the year’s theme (e.g. “Dreaming with Eyes Open” in 2022).
The goal is to highlight the importance and joys of reading for children, and one of the best activities is the Costume Parade! Teachers and students alike can dress up as their favourite book characters, share book recommendations and even give presentations in class about their favourite characters and plotlines.
We stock an incredible range of Book Week costumes for teachers both in-store and online, so you can capture the imagination of your students and encourage them to bury their noses in books. Browse through our collection and shop online — we offer fast and affordable delivery throughout Australia.
Need some Book Week teacher costume ideas? No problem! We have hundreds of fun and creative costumes in stock that are guaranteed to “wow” your students and encourage them to read in their own time. Here are just a few ideas based on what we’ve got in stock!
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll in 1865. The story follows an adventurous girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole and into a fantasy world where animals talk and wear clothing, and the Queen of Hearts is larger than life. The novel falls into the “literary nonsense” genre… and we can see why!
Dress up as Alice, the curious heroine of the story, or take a walk on the wild side as the Mad Hatter with his bright orange hair and mercury-filled hat. Just add a cup of tea and a plush hare to join the party.
The Wizard of Oz is an absolute classic written by L. Frank Baum (it’s actually part of a larger Oz series that has since been turned into movies and television shows). The story follows a Kansas farm girl named Dorothy who ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her dog Toto are swept away by a tornado. On her way home, she meets lots of interesting characters like Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the West and her friends — the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion.
There are countless memorable characters to dress up as — our Lion Costume Set with Ears and a Tail is perfect for the Cowardly Lion or you can go all-out as the Tinman who wants a heart to feel love. Alternatively, you can dress up as the ever lovely Dorothy who only wants to go home to Kansas.
Peter Pan is a fictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (although now the character is best known for the 1953 Disney movie). Peter appeared in Barrie’s novels The Little White Bird, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter and Wendy. Peter also appeared in the West End stage play Peter Pan; or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.
In our collection of Book Week costumes for teachers, we have a Crocodile One-Piece that could easily pass as Tick-Tock the Crocodile, an adult-sized Peter Pan Costume or a Pirate Costume so you can be the villainous Captain Hook!
Who said your Book Week character had to be fictional? There are thousands of real historical characters with incredible stories to tell. Julius Caesar, for example, led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars, defeated his political rivals with ease and fraternised with the beautiful Egyptian Pharaoh Cleopatra — plus, his story was later covered by Shakespeare himself!
You could even dress up as Medusa, a Gorgon from Greek mythology whose hair was turned to snakes by Poseiden, the God of the Sea. Those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone.
Want to set up an impressive display for your students? We have hundreds of decorations to create a sense of wonder in the classroom — for example, in 2022, the theme was “Dreaming with Eyes Open”. The idea is to mix fantastic themes, colours, textures and imagery to create a dreamlike world for the kids to enjoy.
Alice in Wonderland would be a great theme for Book Week (and easy, too). You can turn the entire classroom into Wonderland — add one of our White Rabbit Cutouts next to the classroom door to welcome the students to their lesson, surrounded by matching Pocket Watch Cutouts.
Set up the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for morning tea with drinks, snacks and homemade cookies that say “eat me” (make sure to check for any allergies before baking). Just add a Mad Hatter-Themed Tablecloth for a touch of chaotic colour!
Of course, it wouldn’t be Wonderland without the Queen of Hearts. Add a plate of tarts to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and hang Assorted Playing Card Whirls from the ceiling to represent the Queen’s Court.
Don’t forget to paint some white roses red, or else it’ll be off with your head!
From balloons to hanging decorations, confetti and paper for decorating, we have everything you need to create a dreamy, fantastical world for your students. Browse through our collection of decorations and stationery to discover the possibilities!
