Every year Book Week has a specific theme and in 2021 we’re looking at Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds. You could have the best costume in your school Book Week parade with the large range of children’s costumes you can find at Shindigs.
Most schools have their own interpretation of the theme or set a specific outline, so check the newsletters and of course talk to your children because their input is important too. Every year we find parents a little confused on how to interpret the theme and sctaching their heads wondering what to dress their child in, so we’ve put together a little list of ideas for childrens costumes that can specifically work for this year’s theme.
The Horrible Histories franchise is the easiest choice of book here. With 23 books in the series covering a range of eras from Savage Stone Age to Vicious Vikings, Stormin’ Normans to Awesome Egyptians you really are spoilt for choice. Have a look through our Royal & Historical costume theme to see the costumes we suggest for your ‘Old Worlds” book week theme.

Imagine what the future may hold; maybe we will live amongst the Stars and will all need to wear Astronaut space suits.
What if Aliens were to invade our Earth?
Given the future hasn’t been written yet you can really let your imagination run wild with this part of the 2021 Book Week theme. When we think of New Worlds we automatically think Robots and Cyborgs and Aliens. But maybe? Just maybe it’s the complete opposite and we all live underwater, residing in Submarines and Mermaids are our best friends.
Maybe you’re going to grow up to be a thieving granny just like in David Williams book Gangster Granny.
The thought of getting old can be a little scary, but when children are dressed up as Grandma or Grandpa it’s just hilarious and one of the easiest costumes to achieve.
For a simple Grandpa costume, raid your cupboard and find a pair of dress pants and a checker collared shirt. Add on a bow tie, suspenders, a moustache and some glasses.
Grandma is just as easy, a cardigan and floral dress from your own clothes is perfect. Add on a pearl necklace, some knee high stockings a pair of framed glasses. Put your hair in rollers or add on a Grey Granny Wig and your good to go.
If you can find a walking stick or Zimmer frame to complete these looks it will be even better!!
The concept of Other Worlds is what the whole industry of children’s books is based on. Taking your imagination to a world that is unlike our own and coming up with the most elaborate version of the world you would want to live in, your options are essentially endless here.
Are you a wizard that goes to a school for witchcraft and wizardry, we know Harry Potter is!
Every time you leave your room do your toys come to life and have amazing adventures of their own, we know Woody and Buzz do!
Perhaps you never want to grow up and have a best friend named Tinkerbell, we know Peter Pan does!
